Groundbreaking Technology of the Sphere:

The World’s Highest-Resolution Screen: The enormous, wrap-around screen you saw inside is actually the world’s largest high-resolution LED display. It measures 160,000 square feet and boasts a staggering 16K resolution, which is what makes the visuals so crystal clear and hyper-realistic, completely enveloping your peripheral vision.

Sphere Immersive Sound: That incredible audio isn’t just loud; it’s a precisely engineered system. The venue utilizes 167,000 programmable speakers that use beamforming and wave field synthesis to deliver audio with pristine clarity to every single seat. The film’s classic score was actually remastered and its orchestrations re-recorded to take full advantage of this speaker system.

Multi-Sensory 4D Effects: Beyond the vibrating (haptic) seats you mentioned, the show also uses other environmental effects. During the infamous tornado scene, the massive fans not only blast wind and leaves, but the sound system also employs infrasound haptic seats (the vibrating chairs) to make you feel the low-frequency rumble of the storm.

The Wizard of Oz Specifics:

AI Enhancement: To fill the massive, curved screen—since the original 1939 film was shot for a standard 4:3 ratio—the movie’s visuals were meticulously upscaled using artificial intelligence (AI). AI was also used to generate new imagery to seamlessly extend the shots beyond the original film’s frame, ensuring the spectacle fills the whole dome.

Custom Scents: You noticed the wind and leaves, but the “4D” experience also includes custom environmental effects, which means the show can also use scent to further immerse the audience in the land of Oz—like the poppies!

The Pre-Show Experience: Before the 75-minute film, your ticket granted you access to the Atrium, which is part of “The Sphere Experience.” This area features futuristic exhibits like the Aura humanoid robots and interactive tech displays, setting the tone for the spectacle to come. For this show, the Atrium was even themed to resemble sepia-toned Kansas from the movie’s opening, with cool props like replicas of the ruby slippers and Professor Marvel’s cart.
